In this post, I am sharing an easy sensory bin idea that’s perfect for younger toddlers who love to put everything in their mouths. On this particular day, the kids were getting restless and needed something to do—and fast! I didn’t have a plan for the morning, but I knew I needed to come up with something fun. I glanced into the pantry, saw a can of chickpeas, and remembered we could make chickpea foam.
Within minutes, I whipped it up, and the kids were so happy. They love helping make the foam just as much as they enjoy playing in it. This chickpea foam recipe is taste-friendly and super quick to make—great for those moments when you need a fun activity in a pinch. With just 2 ingredients and less than 5 minutes to whip up, my kids played with it for a solid 30 minutes!

Ingredients
In this recipe, you’ll only need 2 ingredients:
- 1 can of chickpea water (Save the chickpeas for this healthy chickpea cookie recipe!)
- 1/4 tsp of cream of tartar
- Food coloring (optional)
Since this is taste-friendly and my baby puts everything in her mouth, I chose to use food coloring that has no artificial colors.
You’ll also need either a stand mixer or a hand mixer to whip up the chickpea foam. This makes the process quick and easy, ensuring you get the perfect texture for sensory play. We use this stand mixer which my kids love to watch spin around and around!

Do I need Cream of Tartar to make Chickpea Foam?
We’ve made chickpea foam both with and without cream of tartar, and while it’s not absolutely necessary, it definitely makes a difference. With cream of tartar, the foam lasts much longer, gets foamier and fluffier, and whips up more quickly. Without it, the foam still works, but it takes longer to form and doesn’t last as long, usually breaking down after 10-20 minutes. However, if you don’t have any cream of tartar in the house, don’t worry too much. My kids were still satisfied and had a great time playing with the foam even without it.
The picture on the left shows the chickpea foam made without cream of tartar, and the picture on the right was made with cream of tartar. You can see a pretty clear difference between the two. The left chickpea foam is a bit more watery and not as fluffy. However, the kids had fun playing in both (and bulldozer did too, of course!)

How to Clean Up Chickpea Foam
Cleaning up after chickpea foam play is super easy. I usually just rinse out the bin in the sink, and it’s good as new. The food coloring we use doesn’t stain anything—not hands, furniture, or clothes—so there’s no worry about lingering mess. Sometimes the foam even dissolves on its own, making it just like cleaning up water. It’s a quick and hassle-free process, perfect for busy parents!

Sensory Bin Table
We use the Ikea FLISAT children’s sensory table in our playroom for all our sensory activities. Here is a cheaper lookalike sensory table on Amazon. This table is perfect for sensory play because it has removable bins that fit inside the table, making clean-up super easy. You can use it as a regular table for crafts or snack time, and when it’s time for sensory play, just take the lids off the bins. It’s a great height for both my toddler and baby, allowing them to comfortably reach in and play.
How Long does Chickpea Foam Last?

Based on our experience, the longevity of chickpea foam depends on whether or not you use cream of tartar. Without cream of tartar, the foam only lasts about 10-20 minutes before it starts to break down. However, if you do use cream of tartar, the foam lasts much longer. I’d say it holds up for about 45 minutes to an hour with active play. This gives the kids plenty of time to enjoy the sensory fun!
Storing Chickpea Foam
Chickpea foam is intended to be a one-time use activity. I’ve never tried storing it because it usually starts to deflate after the kids are done playing with it. However, you can technically store aquafaba (chickpea foam) in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container for up to a week. That said, I’m not sure it would retain its foamy texture as well after storage. For the best sensory play experience, I recommend making it fresh each time.
Chickpea Foam Ideas
There are so many fun variations you can try with this chickpea foam! Here are a few ideas:
- Add different colors of food coloring to create a rainbow foam sensory bin. If you have multiple cans, you could do a different color for each can of chickpeas!
- Mix in some glitter for a sparkly, magical experience. (Not a taste-friendly option!)
- Add a few drops of kid-safe essential oils for a sensory experience that smells great too.
- Hide small toys or objects in the foam for a fun treasure hunt game.
My kids love to use big kitchen spoons and measuring cups to play in the foam. My son also loves to put his toy cars in the foam and then rinse them off in a water bin like a car wash!
How do I know when Chickpea Foam is done?

Making chickpea foam usually takes about 3-5 minutes. I typically just eyeball it—when it looks foamy enough, I take it out for the kids to play. Technically, you’re looking for stiff peaks, which means the foam holds its shape well and doesn’t collapse when you lift the mixer. It should have close to a shaving cream consistency. If you’re unsure, refer to the picture for an idea of what it should look like. Once you see those stiff peaks, the foam is ready for some fun sensory play!
