Thanksgiving crafts are some of my favorites because they bring out all the cozy, seasonal vibes, and they’re a great way to spend time with the kids while creating something memorable. This year, we did a fun turkey-themed activity that involved a bit of paint, creativity, and lots of giggles. It’s perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who love getting hands-on—literally—with their projects.
My son loves any excuse to paint his hands and feet (even if it tickles!), so this was an instant hit in our house. It’s always so fun to see how excited he gets when he sees his painted handprints come to life as part of a craft. The best part? It’s not just a cute Thanksgiving activity—it’s also a keepsake that captures his tiny hands and feet at this stage, something I know I’ll treasure in years to come.
This craft is simple, fun, and can be customized however your kids want. Whether you’re looking for a rainy day project, a Thanksgiving-themed activity for your little ones, or even something to make and gift to grandparents, this is a great option. How to Make the Turkey Handprint Craft

- Paint the Foot: Start by helping your child paint the bottom of their foot brown. Be sure to apply an even coat of paint to get a good print.
- Make the Footprint: Gently press their foot onto the paper. Try not to smoosh or wiggle it around so the print stays clear. This will be the body of the turkey.
- Flip the Paper: Once the footprint is on the paper, turn the paper around so the toes are facing down.
- Paint the Hands: Choose your paint colors for the feathers. We used red, orange, and yellow, but feel free to get creative! Help your child paint their hand with one color at a time.
- Make the Handprints: Gently press their painted hand onto the paper around the footprint, fanning out from the top and sides to create the feathers. Repeat with the other colors.
- Let It Dry: Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the details.
- Add Final Touches: Use glue to add googly eyes near the top of the footprint. Cut a small triangle out of orange paper for the beak and glue it in place. You can also cut out two small orange feet and add them below the toes.
Now you have a cute turkey keepsake to display for Thanksgiving!
Variations to the Turkey Handprint Craft
- Different Feather Colors: Instead of red, orange, and yellow, try using non-traditional colors like blue, purple, or green for a more unique and colorful turkey. Let your child pick their favorite colors to make it extra special.
- Add Glitter: Sprinkle glitter onto the wet paint for a sparkly turkey. Just be sure to do this in an area that’s easy to clean up!
- Use Construction Paper for Feathers: Instead of painting hands, you can trace and cut out your child’s hands on colorful construction paper. Glue these hand cutouts around the footprint for a cleaner, less messy option.
- Create a Background: Turn the craft into a scene by painting or drawing a background. Add grass, trees, or a sun to make the turkey part of a larger fall-themed picture.
- Turn It Into a Card: Fold the paper into a card and write a Thanksgiving message inside. This makes for a meaningful keepsake or gift for family members.
- Add Names or Dates: Write your child’s name and the year on the turkey for a keepsake you’ll cherish as they grow.
- Use Canvas or Fabric: Instead of paper, use a small canvas or fabric square to create a long-lasting decoration you can display every Thanksgiving.
These variations allow you to adapt the craft to different preferences, age groups, and occasions!
