How to make a spider hand print painting

Print out the spider web sheet. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to download it for free! If you don’t have a printer, a plain sheet of paper works too.
Help your child paint their hand with black paint. Make sure to cover their entire palm and four fingers, but leave their thumb unpainted.

Gently press their hand onto the paper horizontally. This will form one half of the spider. They can spread their fingers for more spider leg detail or keep them close together.
Paint their hand again (no thumb) and press in the opposite direction to complete the other half of the spider. The palm prints can overlap slightly to create the spider body.
Let the paint dry, then add details! Stick on googly eyes or use a white pencil to draw a mouth to give your spider some personality.

Variations for the Spider Hand Print Painting
- Use different colors: Instead of traditional black, you can let your child use fun colors like purple, orange, or even glitter paint to make a colorful spider.
- Add extra legs: If you want your spider to have more legs, you can create additional handprints with just the fingers and not the palm to add more “legs” around the body.
- Create a background scene: Encourage your child to paint or color a background around the spider—maybe some grass, a moon, or other Halloween-themed elements like pumpkins or bats.
- Spider family: Use multiple handprints from all family members to create a whole family of spiders on one page. It makes for a cute keepsake showing the hand sizes of your family at the same time.
- Glitter webs: After the spider dries, add a touch of glitter glue to the spider web lines for a sparkly effect that pops off the page.
Why This Makes a Great Keepsake

Handprint crafts are some of my absolute favorites because they capture a little piece of your child’s growth at a specific moment in time. Looking back at the size of their hands as they grow older is such a special reminder of how small they once were. This spider handprint painting is not only a fun Halloween craft but also a sweet keepsake to look back on in future years. Every time I see a handprint project, it takes me back to the exact age and stage my child was at, making it such a meaningful memento. Plus, it’s a great way to document those fleeting childhood moments in a creative, hands-on way!
