Materials

- Cupcake tray
- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Food coloring
If you don’t have a cupcake tray on hand, don’t worry! You can easily use a bunch of small containers or even plastic cups to create the same fun effect. Just make sure you have enough to keep the excitement going as the colors are revealed!
How to Do the Surprise Colors Experiment

- Add Food Coloring: Start by putting a few drops of food coloring into each section of the cupcake tray or your small containers. You can use different colors in each section to make the experiment more exciting!
- Cover with Baking Soda: Next, add baking soda to each section of the cupcake tray, making sure to completely cover the food coloring. Your measurements don’t need to be exact—just ensure the colors are hidden underneath the baking soda.
- Reveal the Colors: Now for the fun part! Have your child slowly add vinegar to each section of the cupcake tray. As the vinegar reacts with the baking soda, the hidden colors will pop up and reveal themselves during the fizzy reaction. We used these paint cups to hold the vinegar, which are great because they have a top with a small hole that helps prevent spills. We also used these eyedroppers so my son could slowly add the vinegar all on his own. For easier cleanup, I recommend placing the cupcake tray onto a baking sheet to help contain the mess when the tray overflows.
