Will Chalk Paint Stain my Driveway?

The great thing about sidewalk chalk paint is that it’s really easy to clean up. It didn’t stain our driveway and came off easily with a quick spray from the hose. If you’re worried about stains, it’s a good idea to test a small, discrete area of your driveway beforehand to make sure it washes off easily. The paint mixture is pretty watery, so there might be some mess when your kids play with it, but being outside makes it easier since you don’t have to worry about the mess as much.

How to Make Homemade Chalk Paint

1. Measure Ingredients: Measure equal parts water to cornstarch in each portion of your muffin tray or individual containers. For our activity, I used about 1/4 cup of water and cornstarch per portion. If you want a thicker paint, use slightly less water. Feel free to play around with this ratio until you have a consistency you’re happy with.
2. Add Food Coloring: Add a few drops of food coloring to each portion and stir well. The mixture will feel thick at first but will become smoother as you continue to stir it.
3. Paint: Take your tray of homemade chalk paint outside and let the kids start painting!

When you first start painting, the colors may not seem very bright or noticeable. Don’t worry—you didn’t do anything wrong! As the paint dries, the colors will get brighter and more vibrant. Just give it a little time.

How to Store Homemade Chalk Paint

I usually just dump out the chalk paints when we are done using them because they are so easy to make. However, if you want to save them for another play session, simply store the leftover paint in an airtight container. This will keep the paint from drying out and allow you to use it again later. Just remember to give it a good stir before using it again, as the ingredients may settle over time. Storing the paint can be a convenient option if you plan to use it frequently.

Here are some fun variations to try with your homemade sidewalk chalk paint:

• Chalkboard Painting: We also tried the paint on our chalkboard using our favorite foldable easel. The paint worked well, though it was a little drippy. It provided a different texture and surface for the kids to explore, adding to the fun.
