How to Make Tie Dye Coffee Filters: No-Prep Art Project

Materials

• Markers
• Coffee filters
• Spray bottle full of water

You can use any markers you have on hand for this project, but we used washable markers to make clean-up easier. Any type of coffee filter will work, but white ones are best because they show the colors more vibrantly.

How to Make Tie Dye Coffee Filters

You can use either one coffee filter at a time or layer a few together. We tried using both one coffee filter and three to four coffee filters at once in our project, and they both came out great!

1. Fold the Coffee Filter(s): Fold the coffee filter(s) into fourths or eighths. Folding into fourths will give kids more room to color, but either method works well.
2. Color the Coffee Filters: Have kids color onto the coffee filters, making designs and different patterns. They can let their creativity run wild! There is no wrong way to do this, as once the water is sprayed on, all the colors will blend together beautifully.
3. Spray with Water: Spray water directly onto the coffee filter until it is saturated and you see the colors start to bleed together.
4. Dry: Open up the coffee filters and lay them on a paper towel to dry.

What to Do with the Coffee Filters Once They Dry

Once your tie dye coffee filters are dry, there are many creative ways to use them:

• Decorate Windows: Hang the colorful coffee filters in your windows. The sunlight shining through the vibrant colors will create a beautiful stained-glass effect.

• Butterflies: Create coffee filter butterflies by folding the filter accordion-style, securing the middle with a pipe cleaner, and spreading out the wings. Add googly eyes for a fun touch!

Clean Up

This project is pretty clean, but there are a few things I learned to help contain the mess. We put the coffee filters on a baking sheet while my son colored on them and sprayed the water. This helped contain all the water and marker mess, making clean-up a breeze. We also placed the coffee filters on a paper towel to dry, which worked well to soak up all the extra water. Overall, this was a super low-prep and minimal clean-up project, making it perfect for a quick and easy activity with the kids!

Variations

Here are some fun variations to try with your tie dye coffee filters:

• Different Folding Techniques: Experiment with different folding techniques to create unique patterns. You can fold the coffee filters into halves, quarters, eighths, or even accordion-style for varied designs.
• Use Eye Droppers: Instead of a spray bottle, use eye droppers to apply the water. This can give kids more control over where the water goes and create more defined patterns.
• Layering with Other Materials: Combine the coffee filters with other materials like tissue paper or thin fabric to see how the different textures interact with the colors.
• Markers and Watercolors: Combine markers with watercolor paints. First, color with markers, then add a few drops of watercolor paint before spraying with water. This creates a more vibrant and diverse color palette.
• Use Food Coloring: Instead of markers, try using food coloring. Drop a few drops of food coloring on the coffee filter and then spray with water to see the colors spread.
• Draw with Crayons: Before using the markers, have kids draw designs with crayons. The wax from the crayons will resist the markers and water, creating a cool resist effect.
